BDSM Glossary

Clear, judgment-free definitions of the most common BDSM and kink terms — so you always know what a word means.

A handful of these terms are easy to confuse with each other. For the pairs that trip people up most — Dominant vs Top, Submissive vs Slave, Rigger vs Rope Bunny — see BDSM terms compared side by side. And if Top vs Bottom is the pair you're unsure about for yourself, the top or bottom test settles it in ten questions.

Aftercare
The care and attention partners give each other after a scene — cuddling, water, reassurance, or quiet time — to ease the physical and emotional comedown.
Ageplay
A consensual, adults-only role play where one partner adopts a younger headspace. Distinct from any real-age content; it centers on comfort, play, and care.
BDSM
An umbrella term for Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism & Masochism — a spectrum of consensual power-exchange and sensation practices.
Bondage
Consensually restricting a partner's movement using rope, cuffs, or other restraints, for aesthetics, sensation, or control. Learn more →
Bottom
The person receiving an action in a scene (e.g. being tied or spanked). A bottom is not necessarily submissive — it describes what you do, not who leads.
Brat
A submissive who expresses submission through playful defiance, teasing, and resistance rather than eager obedience. Learn more →
Brat Tamer
A dominant who enjoys the challenge of taming a brat's defiance through wit, patience, and firm-but-fair correction. Learn more →
Breath play
Consensually restricting or controlling breathing for sensation. Considered edge play because of the risks; requires knowledge and caution.
Caregiver
A nurturing dominant role (e.g. Daddy/Mommy) that leads through warmth, structure, and protection rather than strict authority. Learn more →
Collar / Collaring
A collar symbolizes commitment or ownership in a D/s dynamic; collaring is the ceremony or act of giving one, often carrying deep meaning. Learn more →
Consent
Freely given, informed, specific, and reversible agreement to participate. It is the non-negotiable foundation of all BDSM.
DDLG
Daddy Dom / Little Girl (and its variants) — a caregiver dynamic pairing a nurturing dominant with a partner in a little headspace.
Degradation
Consensual humiliation play where demeaning words or acts are used for arousal, always within negotiated limits and followed by aftercare.
Dominant
The partner who takes authority and directs a dynamic, responsible for structure, pace, and a partner's wellbeing. Learn more →
Edge play
Higher-risk activities (e.g. breath play, knife play) that push physical or psychological edges, requiring extra knowledge, trust, and negotiation.
Fetish
A strong, focused arousal tied to a specific object, material, or body part (leather, latex, feet, etc.). Learn more →
Flogger
A multi-tailed impact tool. Depending on material and technique it can deliver thuddy, sensual strokes or sharp, stinging ones.
Hard limit
An absolute boundary a person will not cross under any circumstances. Hard limits are non-negotiable. Learn more →
Impact play
Striking the body (with hands, paddles, floggers, canes) for sensation, within consent and safe target areas. Learn more →
Kink
Any non-conventional sexual interest or practice. All BDSM is kink, but not all kink is BDSM.
Limits
The boundaries that define what someone will, might, or won't do. Split into soft limits (maybe, with care) and hard limits (never). Learn more →
Little
Someone who connects with a younger, playful headspace in a consensual, adults-only caregiver dynamic. Learn more →
Masochist
A person who experiences pleasure, release, or altered states through consensual intense sensation. Learn more →
Munch
A casual, social meetup for kinky people, usually in a public place like a café or bar — a low-pressure way to meet the community.
Negotiation
The conversation before a scene where partners agree on activities, limits, safewords, and aftercare. Good negotiation makes play safe.
Owner
A dominant in a Master/slave or pet-play dynamic who holds authority over a consenting partner. Learn more →
Ownership / owned
The frame in which one partner consensually belongs to another — the appeal of being claimed and kept rather than simply directed. Often marked by a collar or a chosen name, and revocable at any time by either person. Learn more →
Pet play
A dynamic where one partner adopts animal-like mannerisms (puppy, kitten, pony), often cared for by an owner or handler. Learn more →
Primal
Instinct-driven play based on raw physicality rather than protocol; expressed as 'hunter' (chasing) or 'prey' (being chased).
Protocol
Agreed rules of behavior within a dynamic — how to speak, move, or serve — ranging from light to high (very formal). Learn more →
RACK
Risk-Aware Consensual Kink — a framework acknowledging that some activities carry risk, and partners consent with full awareness of it.
Rigger
The person who ties in rope bondage, valuing artistry, precision, and the trust required to bind a partner safely. Learn more →
Rope bunny
The person who is tied in rope bondage, who finds beauty and surrender in being bound. Learn more →
Sadist
A person who takes pleasure in delivering consensual sensation or pain to a willing partner. Learn more →
Safeword
A pre-agreed word or signal that immediately pauses or stops a scene. 'Red' commonly means stop; 'yellow' means slow down or check in.
Scene
A defined period of BDSM play with a beginning and end, framed by negotiation beforehand and aftercare afterward.
Sensation play
Exploring the senses with temperature, texture, or light stimulation (ice, feathers, wax) rather than heavy impact.
Service
Acts of devotion — practical tasks, rituals, or attentiveness — through which a submissive expresses care and submission.
Slave
A submissive in a deeper, ongoing authority-transfer dynamic (Master/slave). Distinct from casual submission; still fully consensual. Learn more →
SSC
Safe, Sane, and Consensual — a classic guideline for ethical BDSM, emphasizing safety, sound judgment, and consent.
Sub drop
An emotional or physical low that can follow an intense scene as endorphins fade. Aftercare and self-care help ease it.
Submissive
The partner who consensually yields control within negotiated limits, finding freedom in trust and surrender. Learn more →
Subspace
A trance-like, euphoric headspace a submissive may enter during intense play, driven by adrenaline and endorphins.
Switch
Someone who moves between dominant and submissive roles depending on partner, mood, or moment. Learn more →
Top
The person performing an action in a scene (e.g. doing the tying or spanking). A top is not necessarily dominant.
Topping from the bottom
When the receiving partner tries to direct or control a scene meant to be led by the top — sometimes playful, sometimes a negotiation issue.
Vanilla
Non-kink sexuality, or someone whose interests fall outside BDSM. Not an insult — just a description. Learn more →
Voyeur
Someone aroused by watching consensual intimacy or power exchange. Learn more →
Wax play
Dripping warm candle wax on the skin for sensation and temperature play, using body-safe candles. Learn more →
