What Is a BDSM Test?
A BDSM test is a self-assessment questionnaire that helps you understand your preferences within BDSM and kink. By answering questions about power, sensation, restraint, and connection, the test estimates which archetypes and roles best describe you — and how strongly each one fits. Think of it as a mirror for desires that are often hard to put into words.
It is not a diagnosis, a grade, or a fixed identity. It is a private, judgment-free starting point for self-reflection and for conversations with a partner. You will also see it called a kink test, a BDSM quiz or a BDSM assessment — they all describe the same kind of tool.
None of it depends on your gender or who you're attracted to — the archetypes describe how you relate to power and sensation, not who you do it with. If that's your question, we cover it in the BDSM test for gay, lesbian and LGBTQ+ people.

Take the BDSM TestHow the BDSM test works
You respond to a series of statements — usually on a scale from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree." Behind the scenes, each answer contributes to several archetype scores at once. A single question about enjoying control, for example, might add to Dominant and Caregiver while subtracting from Submissive.
When you finish, the test normalizes your scores to a 0–100 scale and ranks them. That's why you get a rich profile — a primary archetype plus meaningful secondary ones — instead of being forced into one category.
What a BDSM test measures
- Power orientation — whether you lean toward leading (dominance), following (submission), or both (switching).
- Sensation — your relationship to intensity, pain, and physical sensation as a sadist, masochist, or neither.
- Restraint and service — interest in bondage, protocol, and acts of devotion.
- Role and play styles — brat, caregiver, little, pet, primal, exhibitionist, voyeur, and more.
- Experience and limits — some tools also measure what you've tried and where your hard boundaries are.
How to read your BDSM test score
Every archetype gets its own score from your answers, and the 0–100 scale is then fitted to your own answer sheet rather than to a fixed maximum: an archetype you felt neutral about would land at 50%, so a percentage shows how far your answers leaned rather than a score out of 100. Because one answer feeds several archetypes at once, it is normal to see a high number on more than one.
One consequence is worth knowing: because the scale is fitted to your own answers, your 82% and a partner's 82% are not the same measurement, so which archetypes came up tells you more than the numbers themselves. There is also no total score to pass or fail — your profile is the shape of your top few results read together. That is why our compatibility test compares two people's archetypes rather than their percentages.
You always get a named primary archetype: this test never hands back a “Vanilla” verdict or a blank result, however you answer. So if the archetype you land on does not feel like you, read it as the closest of our 16 archetypes rather than a diagnosis — and the Vanilla guide covers interests that sit outside kink altogether. Our BDSM test results guide explains every archetype and score in detail.
Are BDSM tests accurate?
A BDSM test is as accurate as your honesty while taking it. It reflects how you feel today, and preferences evolve with trust and experience. Use it as a tool for insight and communication — not as a label that defines you. When in doubt, retake it after you've explored more.
BDSM Test: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BDSM test?
A BDSM test is a self-assessment questionnaire that helps you understand your preferences within BDSM and kink. By answering a series of questions about power, sensation, restraint, and connection, the test estimates which BDSM archetypes and roles best describe you and how strongly each one fits.
How does the BDSM test work?
You answer a set of statements — typically on an agree-to-disagree scale — and each answer adds to or subtracts from several archetype scores at once. The result is a profile that ranks archetypes from 0 to 100, showing a primary result and several secondary ones rather than a single label.
What does a BDSM test measure?
It measures tendencies, not identity: your attraction to dominance or submission, your response to sensation and intensity, your interest in restraint, service, role play, exhibition, and more. Some tests also measure practical experience or map personal limits.
How do I read my BDSM test score?
Read the percentages as a ranking of your own answers rather than an absolute measurement. Each archetype is scored from your responses, and the 0-100 scale is then fitted to your own answer sheet: an archetype you felt neutral about would land at 50%, so the figures show how far your answers leaned, not how kinky you are out of 100. Nothing adds up to a pass mark, and two people's numbers are not measured against the same yardstick.
How accurate is a BDSM test?
A BDSM test is only as accurate as your honesty while answering, and it describes current tendencies rather than a fixed identity. It is a reflection and conversation tool, not a clinical diagnosis. Preferences naturally change with experience, trust, and time.
How long does a BDSM test take?
Most well-designed BDSM tests take about 5 minutes. Our archetype test is 30 questions, and our experience test covers 30 practices — each is designed to be quick while still producing a nuanced result.
